WWQ #3 has been postponed to tomorrow-- Tuesday, February 21st.
The final draft of the personal narrative is also due tomorrow-- Tuesday, February 21st. For full credit, the personal narrative must be printed. I will not accept electronic copies of the final draft. Students may print their final document at home, or they can utilize the school library. This must be done BEFORE class. This week in grammar, we will focus on HARD TO FIND subjects. They will learn the bulk of this information on Tuesday, and we will spend Wednesday and Thursday practicing. We will also study author's tone this week, as well as how to write a literary analysis following a constructed response format. We are taking a break from passage packets this week. Students will be expected to have read and annotated "Charles Dickens" and "Will's Journal" by Monday, February 27th. As always, students should expect their next quiz (WWQ#4) this coming Friday, February 24th.

WWQ #3 on Friday, February 17th.
This quiz will cover all grammar up until this point. This includes prep phrases, infinitive phrases, action vs. linking verbs, verb phrases, simple subject vs. complete subject, and simple predicate vs. complete predicate. This quiz will also cover personal essays vs. personal narratives. It will require you to recall the different passages we've read over the last week. In addition, anything else completed prior to this week is fair game too. Always study your entire notebook because once it is in the notebook, it could show up on a quiz until the end of the unit... and Nonfiction is a long unit... Your rough draft for your personal narrative is due Thursday, February 16th. Be sure to have an in-class draft for the writing workshop on Thursday. Remember... This is 20% of your grade. The final draft of your personal narrative is due Tuesday, February 21st. Consult the Google Classroom for your rubrics and assignment sheet. If you are struggling, I recommend seeking a tutor. Grammar can be difficult for some students-- understandably so... I like to call it the math of English. I will host more after school re-teaching sessions from time to time, but there is a great benefit in one on one help from another English I teacher. It's still early in the semester to secure a tutor. If grammar has been confusing, please plan to attend my reteaching lesson after school from 2:30-3:30 on Tuesday, February 14th. I will review infinitives, linking verbs, action verbs, and verb phrases.
As a class, we will move on with subjects this week. It's crucial that you get more of a mastery with verbs as we move forward into the semester. See you after school on Tuesday! If you plan to attend, please request a ride at 3:30pm. Last week, student's completed their first WEEKLY WORK QUIZ (WWQ). Students can expect to take a WWQ every Friday of the semester. The WWQ will be on the work covered that week, in addition to any weeks prior. If students are keeping track of their class notebooks, they will easily be able to tell what could be covered on the quiz. A good strategy is for students to flip through and study their notebooks each night in preparation for each week's WWQ. Last week's quiz assessed students on the following:
This week, our goal is to cover the following:
SPORCLE HELP: https://www.sporcle.com/games/dylasmaloney/linking-verbs-and-helping-verbs Answer Key for in-class verb practice--> HOMEWORK: ALL STUDENTS SHOULD READ AND ANNOTATE "Earthquake Damage" and "Leading Women." YOU DO NOT HAVE TO COMPLETE CROs. HONORS STUDENTS MUST HAVE THEIR NF BOOK READ BY MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27TH. AS WE ENTER WEEK 3 OF THE SEMESTER, IT IS VITAL TO YOUR STUDENT'S SUCCESS TO BE PREPARED FOR CLASS. PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOUR CHILD HAS THE MATERIALS THEY NEED. REFER TO MY FIRST POST FOR THE COMPLETE LIST OF MATERIALS REQUIRED FOR CLASS. If your child is not performing where you expect he/she should be, check to ensure that they have their materials needed. If they do, make sure they are using these materials adequately. If you haven't already, please join Remind 101 and the Google Classroom.
Coming Up: Weekly Work Quiz 1 (WWQ #1) will be on Friday, February 3rd. Remember that a WWQ will cover skills from the entire week prior to the quiz. For example, next week's quiz will have your preposition list (55 commonly used prepositions... MUST BE MEMORIZED!), prepositional phrases, and close reading. That means you should make sure each evening that you understand the material so that you are prepared for the quiz. You will have a weekly work quiz every Friday. Suggestions for memorizing prepositions: 1. Determine how many prepositions start with each letter. For example, there are three prepositions that start with W... 2. There are numerous YouTube videos that have a tune to memorize the prepositions. Look up these videos and try to remember the song. 3. Follow the link to quiz yourself! --https://www.sporcle.com/games/dylasmaloney/57-common-prepositions---mr-maloneys-class ***The title of the practice quiz says 57 prepositions... but it's out of 55. The title is just wrong. :) As always, email with questions or concerns. Parents: I would like to invite you to join my Remind 101 group for your child's class. Students will also be invited to the same group. I've never used Remind 101 before, but from what I understand, it can be beneficial to help keep parents in the loop. In addition, it can serve as a soft reminder for students who might be forgetful about upcoming assessment dates and assignments. Please take care to join the correct group as messages may be different depending on the class. 2nd Block Students & Parents: text @68dbkdb to the number 81010 If you have trouble with 81010, try texting @68dbkdb to (402) 965-0222. 3rd Block Students & Parents: text @ag4g3c to the number 81010 If you have trouble with 81010, try texting @ag4g3c to (402) 965-0222. 4th Block Students & Parents: text @9dcb7 to the number 81010 If you have trouble with 81010, try texting @9dcb7 to (402) 965-0222. I'm looking forward to an awesome 2nd semester! I can't wait to meet you all! As we quickly approach second semester, it's important that you come to class prepared. The following are items that you will need for English I with Ms. Wells:
Most of the material we read in class will be provided for you. However, you will need to purchase your own copy of your independent nonfiction book (to be discussed at a later date) and your own copy of Lord of the Flies. I am not picky which copy you have to read, but I do not want you reading a copy that has already been previously annotated by someone else. That's all for now! If you or your parents have any questions, please email me ([email protected]), and I'll respond as soon as possible. See you all soon! |
